INTRODUCTION

Knowledge Management (KM) is a trans-disciplinary area that encapsulates processes and techniques for the creation, collection, classification, distribution, evaluation and re-use of institutional and personal knowledge. KM can help to widely share experiences, minimize re-inventing the wheel, promote trust, and facilitate learning environment in organisations.

Many enterprises, local and international, have leveraged successfully on KM to enhance their competitiveness and innovations in the new economy. This is achieved by, among other things, minimizing “re-inventing the wheel”, maximizing reuse, enhancing the flow of knowledge, harnessing and sharing of critical knowledge, and providing a learning environment for knowledge workers. There is a critical shortage of KM professionals worldwide. With its blended mode of delivery, this MSc program is the first of its kind designed to meet this need and beyond in the Asia Pacific region.

The curriculum is co-developed by an international team of leading experts and scholars in KM. Delivery of the program is via a balanced mix of in-person seminars and workshops, online tutorials, and web-based study with enhanced pedagogy. The in-person workshops will be conducted in weekdays evening or weekends. Some subjects have open book examination; some operate with continuous assessments.

PROGRAMME AIMS

The aims of the proposed programme are to provide a balanced approach and treatment of the subject area, to provide participants an in-depth understanding of the tools and methods in the design and implementation of a KM programme and to be familiar with the latest development in prevalent issues in KM. The programme is designed to suit professionals from various disciplines (management, IT, engineering, social work, library science, legal, education, health care, etc.) to acquire and develop expertise in the rapidly growing area of KM. Graduates of the programme, with appropriate working experience, are expected to fulfill the roles of Chief Knowledge Officer, Chief Learning Officer, Knowledge and Learning Director, Innovation Manager, Knowledge Manager, and consultants in various capacities; they carry out, among others, knowledge audits and implement knowledge management programmes in companies and organisations.

The Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University has been most active in teaching, researching and promoting the application of KM. To achieve these, ISE has been very successful in providing rich resources to support their various activities. In particular, their Knowledge Solutions Laboratory (KSL) of the Microsoft Enterprise Systems Centre possesses an open and integrated environment to support teaching, research, industrial collaboration and technology transfer in relation to various KM activities such as e-learning activities, document management, knowledge portal engineering, knowledge sharing, enterprise collaborative platform engineering, workflow management and collaborative product commerce.

ENDORSEMENT MESSAGE

"The Master of Science program in Knowledge Management at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University is one of those unique areas of study that is continually and rapidly evolving as this field changes over time. While providing the structure for graduate level learning, they are flexible enough to insert new thinking and knowledge as it occurs rather than many years after the fact. The Administration and Faculty of the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering are to be congratulated on this creative addition to its offerings."

Robert Buckman, The Most Admired Knowledge Leader (2002) and ex-CEO of Buckman Laboratories (Most Admired Knowledge Enterprise 2000-2004)

"It is exciting to see this comprehensive knowledge management program available in the Asia Pacific region. The content and flexible delivery will be of great value to students and the organisations they work for."
