ISE students gained victory in HK-Taiwan EPC/RFID Academia Awards 2013

Two ISE student teams from the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering won Gold and Silver Awards in the category of “Most Innovative EPC/RFID Application” in the Hong Kong U-21 RFID Awards 2013 respectively. Following winning in Hong Kong U-21 RFID Awards 2013, the Gold Award winning team was nominated to the Hong Kong-Taiwan EPC/RFID Academia Awards 2013, and finally won “Best Research Awards” among other local and Taiwan winning teams. The team was then invited to participate in “Hong Kong U-21 RFID Award Taiwan Mission Tour 2013” for academic exchange and site visit with Taiwan students and researchers.

The Gold Award winning team with four postgraduate and undergraduate students won “Best Research Awards” with the project entitled “Design and Development of NFC-based Mobile Application for Anti-counterfeiting in Designer Bag Manufacturer” under the guidance of Dr Andrew Ip, Dr Carman Lee and Dr George Ho. Employing NFC (Near Field Communication) technology, cloud computing, anti-counterfeit technology, mobile technology and EPC network, the project aims at providing consumers an effective, user-friendly mobile application to undertake product authentication before purchasing. The mobile application can thus protect consumers’ interests, brand reputation, and establish positive image for the industry.

Mr. Kwong Kuk-hung and Miss Chung Chun-lan, two students from the Gold Award winning team, participated in the Taiwan mission tour, which was held in Taipei and Taichung on 20 - 22 November 2013. They visited National Chin-Yi University of Technology and National Taiwan University of Science and Technology to share their winning case and further discuss with the Taiwan students. Besides, Kuk-hung and Chun-lan also visited Industrial Technology Research Institute in Taipei and National Library of Public Information to broaden their scopes on RFID development and applications in Taiwan. Their experience gained from the tour would definitely help themselves for having further innovative applications in the future.
