ISE Reaps Award for Research Excellence in Natural Science presented by the Ministry of Education

The notable scientific research project led by Dr W.H. Ip (ISE) as a collaborating party has won the Awards for Research Excellence in Natural Science presented by the Ministry of Education. The Awards presentation ceremony was held in Hong Kong on 26 March 2014.

As the collaborating party, the project entitled “Researches on Operation Decisions and Optimization Methods for Complex Manufacturing Systems” (複雜製造系統運作決策與優化方法研究) has been awarded the Natural Science Award - Second Class (自然科學二等獎) in the 2013 Ministry of Education Higher Education Outstanding Scientific Research Output Awards (Science and Technology).

The awarded project is an inter-disciplinary research in information and management sciences. It is supported by the Natural Science Foundation of China, the National High-Tech Program (863 planning) of China and the National Science and Technology Support Program. Focusing on the complex manufacturing systems, systematic research was carried out on the problems of partnership selection, production planning, inventory control and risk management, and the research team also proposed effective and efficient optimization methods for these problems. As a result, the core competitiveness of enterprises in manufacturing industry can be improved. The research achievements were published in five monographs and in more than 600 international and Chinese journals. Among them, 195 were indexed by SCI. The research outcomes are not only applied in many enterprises but also received one national invention patent and one software copyright.

The Awards for Research Excellence in Natural Science have been set up by the Ministry of Education to recognize outstanding research projects among all tertiary institutions in China. The Awards are presented to individuals or units that have made remarkable contributions in the areas of scientific discovery, technological innovation, science and technology advancement, and the implementation of patented technologies. The Awards honor researchers who have made discoveries in natural science and applied science, or given explanations to natural phenomena and characteristics.
