Business Automation Laboratory

The academic programs of ISE have been undergoing significant revision to reflect the strategic objective of producing our new generation of engineers with updated skills in the design and implementation of products, processes and systems. As such, subjects related to the manufacturing systems, information and enterprise systems as well as human activity systems will be introduced. In this respect, it is essential that an environment conducive to the teaching, practical work and research activities related to systems approach exist in our Department. Such move is in line with the forthcoming new programs including:

• MSc in Industrial Logistics Systems
• BEng (Hons) / MEng in Industrial and Systems Engineering
• BSc (Hons) in Enterprise Engineering and E-Business

To realize the vision and missions as well as to support the new academic programs of ISE, the Business Automation Laboratory, which provides an open and integrated environment to support the teaching, research and technology transfer in relation to enterprise engineering, enterprise-wide integration and modelling, is to be established. In particular the Business Automation Laboratory when established will be the first of its kind in Hong Kong and the region.

The Business Automation Laboratory is designed to cover the whole range of product lifecycle from conceptual idea to logistics distribution with focus on the implementation at the enterprise system level which requires the knowledge of relevant hardware and software ranging from sensors or smart cards for data acquisition, understanding of functions of microprocessors as well as configuration of client/server system networking to collaborate product commerce.

In brief, Business Automation Laboratory will be used to:

• strengthen and support student-centred and group based learning in line with the curriculum review in the coming years
• conduct research activities related to enterprise systems integration, collaborative product commerce and enterprise modelling
• disseminate the knowledge to SMEs through student projects,workshop, seminars, consultancy andTeaching Company Schemes.
• act as a technology show case for SMEs in the region in teaching, research and technology transfer in enterprise-wide integration of processes.
