PolyU’s ISE students sharpen their product design skills in the Asia Joint Design Workshop 2014

In order to leverage engineering students’ talents, the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) provides various opportunities for students to join international workshops and competitions. Six ISE undergraduate students were nominated to join the Asia Summer Joint Design Workshop which was held at Chiba University in Japan from 14 to 18 July 2014. Nine top universities in Asia including Chiba University, National Seoul University, Yonsei University, National Cheng Kung University, Nanyang Technological University, Tsinghua University, Tianjin University, Zhejiang University and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) participated. Dr Carman Lee, Assistant Professor of ISE Department was invited by Chiba University to act as an invited academic advisor of the workshop. The students were encouraged to form groups with members of different nationalities. It not only provided an opportunity for students to enrich their teamwork experience, but also resulted in cultural exchanges.

During this 5-day workshop, the invited advisors gave inspirational lectures to nurture the students’ creativity and stimulate them to generate more ideas for new products with a focus on product design, as well as process design. Each group started to create a new product from the conceptual design to the prototype. Apart from brainstorming and discussion, students also gained knowledge of product design and obtain valuable feedback of their products from the eight invited academic advisors and an industrial advisor. Moreover, each group produced a 3-minute video demonstration for the finalized prototype in order to present their ideas and explain how it works in practical situations. Tada, the industrial advisor from Korg showed his appreciation of student work, and the invited advisors were glad to see that the students could show their innovative concepts during the workshop. Students from the nine universities were pleased to make friends with students of different nationalities and enjoyed the workshop in Japan, with all concerned having received a fruitful experience. The students all received Certificates of Participation at the end of the workshop.  ISE will also take an active role to liaise with other universities to provide more future opportunities for student exchange or internship for undergraduate students.
