INTRODUCTION

Hong Kong, like the rest of the world, is continuing its transformation from an information and production-based society to a knowledge-based (KB) society. In a KB society, increasingly, organisations compete based on the individual competence of its employees, collective knowledge of the firm, its trading partners and suppliers. Under such a trading environment, very often the value-add provided by an organisation is measured by added knowledge that it can provide, the time needed to generate/locate the needed knowledge, and the quality of decision made.

Knowledge Management (KM) encapsulates processes and techniques for the creation, collection, indexing, organisation, distribution, and evaluation of institutional knowledge for re-use. KM in its wider interpretation, encompasses key theories and techniques from many diversified areas such as information retrieval, business systems and enterprise engineering, organisational learning, change and innovation management.

More and more companies anticipate the importance of KM for leveraging the intellectual capital of an organisation. Some public listed companies in Hong Kong have created posts related to KM. Local subsidiaries of global firms such as Siemens, Microsoft, IBM, and Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) have also extended the deployment of their knowledge management systems to further harness local knowledge and leverage global expertise to improve their products and services.

The programme is offered in online mode of study via HKCyberU and it is designed for graduates from different disciplines to update and sharpen their knowledge and expertise in the area of KM. Graduates of the proposed programme, with appropriate working experience, are expected to fulfill the roles of, Chief Knowledge Officer, Chief Learning Officer, Director of Learning, Knowledge Manager, Director of Innovation, Innovation Manager, Knowledge Broker, Knowledge Programme Manager / Director , etc. in organisations.

PROGRAMME AIMS

The aims of the proposed programme are to provide a balanced approach and treatment of the subject area, to provide participants an in-depth understanding of the tools and methods in the design and implementation of a KM programme and to be familiar with the latest development in prevalent issues in KM. The programme is suitable for information, records and knowledge management professionals to update their knowledge in the area, as well as people working primarily in information technology, human resource management, technology management, project management, etc. so that they can learn how to apply KM in their working environment.

ENDORSEMENT MESSAGE

"The Master of Science program in Knowledge Management at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University is one of those unique areas of study that is continually and rapidly evolving as this field changes over time. While providing the structure for graduate level learning, they are flexible enough to insert new thinking and knowledge as it occurs rather than many years after the fact. The Administration and Faculty of the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering are to be congratulated on this creative addition to its offerings."

Robert Buckman, The Most Admired Knowledge Leader (2002) and ex-CEO of Buckman Laboratories (Most Admired Knowledge Enterprise 2000-2004)

"It is exciting to see this comprehensive knowledge management program available in the Asia Pacific region. The content and flexible delivery will be of great value to students and the organisations they work for."
